A constitution sets out the government’s powers, and the principles under which we are governed.
The current New Zealand Constitution is out-dated, hard to understand, and too easy for governments to change. To solve that problem, A Constitution for Aotearoa New Zealand proposes a written, codified constitution for New Zealand.
We hope that setting out the rules of government in one document will provide more accessibility and certainty, more transparency, clearer democratic accountability, and better understanding of and protection for civil liberties. We hope that it will provide better protection against governments abusing power. And we hope it will more effectively reflect New Zealand’s identity and nationhood.
